Good science, poorly communicated, helps no one

The science behind environmental health is rigorous. But a finding that people cannot understand — or do not trust — changes nothing. Science communication is the craft of carrying accurate information across the gap between expert knowledge and everyday decisions. For Changemakers it is a core skill, whether you are writing a caption, running a workshop, or explaining a data point to a neighbor.

Clear is not the same as dumbed down

Making something accessible does not mean stripping out the truth. It means choosing the right entry point, using plain language, grounding abstractions in concrete examples, and respecting your audience’s intelligence. "PM2.5 is about 30 times smaller than a human hair" communicates scale without a lecture. The goal is for the listener to walk away with an accurate mental model, not a simplified falsehood.

Know your audience

  • A worried parent needs what to do tonight, not a literature review.
  • A campus group may want the systems and the evidence behind them.
  • A policymaker needs the scale, the affected population, and the tradeoffs.
  • A general social audience needs one clear idea, not ten.

Uncertainty builds trust, it doesn’t break it

Environmental health rarely offers perfect certainty. Saying "the risk is elevated across several days" is more honest — and more trustworthy — than implying a precise cutoff that does not exist. Naming what we do and do not know signals integrity.

Avoiding misinformation

Even well-meaning communicators can spread misinformation by overstating certainty, cherry-picking a scary statistic, stripping away context, or sharing before verifying. Changemakers commit to evidence-based communication: cite sources, represent findings faithfully, distinguish correlation from causation, and correct mistakes openly. Trust, once lost, is expensive to rebuild.
