Designing with people

Human-centered design starts from the needs, contexts, and lived experiences of the people a tool is meant to serve — and keeps them involved throughout. It is the practical method behind participatory innovation from Module 1. Instead of guessing what a community needs, you learn with them, prototype, gather feedback, and refine. The result is technology that fits real lives rather than assumptions about them.

Thinking in systems

Environmental health problems rarely have a single cause or a single fix. Systems thinking is the habit of looking at the whole picture — the connections, feedback loops, and root causes behind a symptom. A spike in asthma visits is not just "bad air"; it connects to traffic patterns, housing, industrial siting, weather, and policy. Seeing the system helps Changemakers propose changes that address causes, not just symptoms, and anticipate ripple effects.

The continuous innovation cycle

The three specializations form a loop. Community Changemakers surface real-world needs and local priorities. Campus Changemakers explore and amplify ideas through education and research. Innovation Changemakers turn those insights into responsible product improvements. Better tools return to communities — generating new needs and feedback, and the cycle continues.

You do not have to pick perfectly right now, and many Changemakers contribute across more than one specialization over time.
